Frequently Asked Questions

We’ve got a space we’d like to build a garden on, is it suitable?

Vegetables love sun so the sunnier your garden is the more suitable it is for growing veg. Gardens that face south get more than enough sun, north facing spaces and roofs shaded by other buildings are the hardest for growing on so they are a bit more tricky.

To find out if your space is suitable, take a photo of your roof on google earth or send us your location and we can take a look. We can then check out how sunny your garden is, measure it and let you know its suitability.

Can you come and have a look at our space?

Yes! Firstly send us over a photo of your space from google earth and if it looks suitable, we can arrange a visit. A member of our team will come to see the space and hear from you about what you would like in the garden. They will get an understanding of the practicalities of the space and we will take it from there.

What are the benefits of having an edible garden in our workplace or restaurant?

Edible roof gardens are beautiful, multi-beneficial places. They provide delicious, nutritious food for people and wildlife. They are wonderful spaces to be in, improving the health and wellbeing of urban dwellers. Whether for staff or customers, they provide unique spaces to meet and entertain clients, have meetings or take a break. They provide opportunities for staff to learn new skills, have positive experiences and connect with nature. Our gardens are also productive places and grow specialist produce for chefs interested in sustainability and unique flavours. When built right, they protect the building structure, improve energy efficiency, reduce rainwater runoff, cool air temperature and can process large amounts of food waste.

How much produce can be grown in the garden?

Our job is to maximise the potential of your growing space. Drawing on our many years of experience, we will ensure that the potential of the growing space is reached, however much sun it gets or however big it is. We weigh and record each harvest and will share them with you at the end of each year if desired, to ensure you're getting the most out of your garden.

Are there implications for the structure of the building with a roof garden?

Roof gardens can be heavy and the roof structure needs to be examined during the design phase of a garden. We will work with you to check that your roof can take the weight as part of the consultation and design process. We then design the garden around the structural constraints to ensure the safety of the building.

How much does it cost?

Every client is unique in what they are looking for and each project we undertake is bespoke, from design to build and then continual care of the space, so there is no standard price. We can discuss your budget and will work with you to build a garden within your budget.

Once we have a garden built, how does it work?

Our gardens start with good design and get better and better every year. We are a company of food growers so once we have built the garden, we tend to it on a regular basis to ensure it delivers value, produce, education and beauty throughout the year. We tend most of our gardens on a weekly basis, across the seasons. Some of this includes having meetings with chefs and staff members to design planting plans, harvesting produce for chefs, hosting workshops and learning opportunities for staff or clients, replacing plants and tending crops and keeping the garden looking lush and beautiful throughout the year. We find with this level of care and expertise, our gardens grow into more beautiful, productive and loved places year on year.

We would like to start exploring building a garden, what are the next steps?

Fantastic! We’re super excited to be going on this sustainability journey with you. Once we have visited your space, checked its suitability and heard from you what you’d like the garden to be like, we will put together a design brief. This will include specific information around the design of the garden and outline our ideas, the possibilities for the space and constraints. The design brief will have a fee proposal, which is the cost of getting the project to completion, from the design, build and full cost of the garden. Once this has been approved, we begin working on the garden! With continual input from you, we take care of the entire design and build process. We source all the building materials within your budget and build the garden with our team of specialist carpenters and builders. We source organic soil and plant up the garden with established plants so it looks full and lush from the day it opens. We will discuss how you would like your garden to be cared for ongoingly to ensure you, your staff, clients or customers are getting the most value out of your garden in the short and long term.
