On Tuesday 1st November, @capital_growth are hosting our founding director, Jack Astbury for a practical training session from 5.30-7pm sharing our extensive experience on designing and installing irrigation systems for community gardens. After the session, you'll have the theory and confidence needed to design and fit an automated water irrigation system in your garden. Together, we'll cover the essential components of an irrigation system, how to use pressure and flow readings to design and install a water efficient system. Participants will be guided to design and draw an irrigation system of their own and are encouraged to bring a real life example. Be sure to have a pen and paper at hand! The last of the seasons flowers are being gathered to create the ‘garden bouquet’, a beautiful amuse-bouche showcasing the garden produce, for guests at Barge East this week. @sabbotino and his team have created this flavourful sweet, tangy, aromatic bite from kohl rabi pickled in 3 parts vinegar to 1 part sugar filled with a reduced lemon verbena jelly. Edible flowers and herbs are then delicately placed inside; dianthus, blackcurrant sage, nasturtium leaf and flower, sage, yarrow leaf and flower, hyssop, sorrel, borage and calendula, which creates a complex and delicious flavour profile. It’s a lovely example of the creative dance between gardeners and chefs in restaurant gardens. 🌸🌿

This week we’ve been harvesting Akebia fruit (Akebia quinata), or chocolate vine as it’s commonly called, at Coutts skyline garden. Native to central China, Japan and Korea, this climbing evergreen shrub works well to create structure, interest and scent in rooftop container planting plans. This unusual fruit grows on a large luscious vine throughout summer, flowering purple, chocolate-scented flowers in spring and fruiting in September. The mild pulp of the soft fruit can be eaten raw with lemon or made into a drink or wine. The leaves can be used as a tea substitute and the pod is also edible and can be stuffed and deep fried as a vegetable. We’ve found it grows well in well-draining containers in a mix of compost, soil and spent mushroom compost. Despite it being drought tolerate, it thrives with regular watering and fruits yearly, which we harvest for the chefs in the Coutts kitchen. 🌿

This is a direct supply chain from garden to kitchen with no air miles and reduced food wastage. It also means we can grow speciality organic herbs and crops that each chef would like to work with. Watering πŸ’¦ With the high, humid temperatures this week watering well is essential, especially on roof gardens. Watering first thing in the morning or later in the evenings is best as it reduces water loss, evaporation and reduces the risk of burnt leaves. If this isn’t possible, angling water towards the root ball is the next best thing. Plants in pots or containers like this corner, dry out more quickly. You can stick your finger into the soil to make sure water seeps to the roots rather than just the first layer of soil. For growers out there, we’ve found drinking lots, regular breaks, wetting clothes with the hose and a wet bandana around the neck can help keep cool while working. Stay cool out there! πŸ’™πŸ’¦

B L A C K B E R R I E S Thornless blackberries are bursting off their stems in bunches at @bargeeast this year, and they’re delicious! We’ve harvested over 10 kilos from just 6 plants already. All of the fences in this garden are planted up with berries to maximise growing space and also make a tasty treat for passers by. We’ve found that training them over winter has made a big difference to the quantity and quality of the crop this year. We’ve planted 3 varieties that fruit at different times so we have berries throughout the season rather than a glut in early autumn. This early variety is ‘Waldo’, which will be followed by ‘Merton’ then ‘Karaka Black’. These Waldos are being harvested to be pickled in vinegar by chef @sabbotino and his team for a dish later in the season. πŸ˜‹

🍏 No.29 Power Station West 🍏 We’ve been designing, building and planting away and we’re excited to share with you our latest garden at No.29 Power Station West. Nestled among Battersea power station, this restaurant terrace is a beautiful spot serving delicious, sustainably sourced food. We designed a garden that would create shelter from the wind while framing the views around it. Customers now sit among the edible plants, looking through the three tiered Espalier apple trees that are trained along tension wires to frame their surroundings. They will provide a crop in late summer and are underplanted with a beautiful mix of edible plants such as oxalis, fennel, nasturtium, borage and many varieties of salvia. The steel planters were made bespoke for the site. We aged them with a zinc finish to give a clean, modern look to the edible garden. Thank you to @wearetheaddress for the opportunity to create another beautiful urban edible garden that can be enjoyed by the chefs, customers, passersby and pollinators alike!

The varieties we’ve found grow well in containers here are ‘blauwschokker’, a beautiful purple heritage pea with gorgeous green pods and ‘Schwizer reisen’, a heirloom sugarsnap pea from Switzerland, both from @vital.seeds Growing in containers on a roof garden can be challenging. Watering can leach nutrients out the soil and roots can’t spread and draw up endless water, NPK (nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium) and other key nutrients such as calcium like they can in soil. Adding nutrients to a strong and healthy soil structure that retains moisture and prevents nutrient loss is essential. These containers have an equal mix of recycled mushroom compost, manure, soil and LECA in a 1:1:1:1:1 ratio that we’ve found works really well to grow to healthy crops on roofs. We’ve worked together to transform their disused roof space into one of London’s largest organic rooftop farms. Sky farm hosts 40 recycled planters bursting with crops, a fruit tree orchard growing over 10 varieties of soft fruit, a repurposed greenhouse, compost area with wormery and space for workshops and community engagement. It has been carefully designed and built with recycled materials to maximise growing space and provide year round crops for the chefs. Our growers tend the Sky farm every week. With their specialist knowledge of urban food production, they sow and harvest produce according to a carefully designed planting plan and keep the garden productive and thriving. Depending on the design needs of the garden, they can be educational for staff, productive for chefs, comfortable for customers and always beautiful. The planting plans are carefully designed to include pollinator friendly plants around edible crops. Year on year, our gardens grow into more established and thriving parts of the wild urban landscape. Back in 2013 , we helped develop Food From The Sky founded by Azul-Valerie Thome. An innovative and pioneering rooftop garden growing organic veg that went straight to the supermarket it sat on. No food miles, no wastage, no storage, no pesticides, no fossil fuels. A sustainable, productive rooftop hub where wildlife thrived, adults and children learnt about where food comes from, precious materials were recycled and large amounts of delicious, healthy food grown for the community. We would love to see more of these rooftop gardens across London’s skyline, providing sustainable food production, educating communities, establishing wildlife corridors and creating thriving natural oasis’ on unused urban spaces. πŸ™πŸ 🌿

We’ve been giving the playground at East Wick Nursery a makeover! With reclaimed fencing, bridges for the children to play on and bespoke buggy stores with green roofs πŸ›  In line with our commitment to helping workplaces increase sustainability, all the timber is recycled from a nearby building and the green roof is planted up with sedum, a drought tolerant, hardy perennial that’s easy to look after. It will flower in the summer, increasing biodiversity and bringing pollinators and greenery to the playground. Green roofs have many other benefits such as purifying and cooling the surrounding air, absorbing rainwater, increasing energy efficiency and improving feelings of wellbeing; so important in concrete corners of the city. 🌳🐝
