Food from the Sky

Urban Organic co-founder Jack Astbury helped create London’s first commercially viable rooftop market garden above Thorton’s Budgens supermarket in Crouch End. As head grower at Food from the Sky for three years, Jack designed the garden to ensure maximum productivity and use all the available natural resources, such as rain water and supermarket waste.

The produce from the roof was sold in the supermarket below and to local cafes and restaurants.

Jack ran an annual apprenticeship scheme, teaching core growing skills and passing on his knowledge of how to produce consistently high quality produce for customers. He also held courses on organic growing and offered weekly volunteering opportunities.
